“PLACES – MONUMENTS – PEOPLE”
Photo exhibition from the Photo Library of the Municipality of Kea
Recording of the historical course of Kea in the last 80 years

The photo exhibition entitled «Places Monuments People» which takes place within the framework of the Biosphere Keos institution includes photographic evidence from the Photo Library of the Municipality of Kea. The exhibition depicts the history of Kea in the last 80 years, whereas the photo material presented extends from the late 19th century to the 1980s. The photos were classified and are presented chronologically in three units. The material is accompanied by explanatory texts and captions by the owners of the family collections, by writers and academics who have worked on relevant topics, as well as by people who with their oral statements contributed to its documentation. Preserving the historical memory is particularly important since the local community will remember, the younger generation will learn and the visitors will be introduced into the cultural heritage of our place.
The exhibition is organized by the Municipality of Kea and by the Public Benefit Organization of the Municipality of Kea under the supervision of the non-profit cultural institution KEOS CULTURE and is carried out with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture and Sports. It will be held at the schoolyard of the kindergarten in Vourkari, Kea and it will last from 1-20 August, daily from 7-11 pm.
Biosphere Keos is an idea of KEOS CULTURE and is implemented by the Municipality of Kea. Its main activity is the organization and curation of exhibits on the cultural heritage of the island. This is the second year that it is carried out and it is going to continue in the next years with different thematic parts aiming at the identification and promotion of Kea’s cultural richness.

The Municipality of Kea under the supervision of the non-profit cultural institution KEOS CULTURE has created the Photo Library of the Municipality of Kea aiming at the research, collection, digitalization, study, documentation, protection and identification of Kea’s photos. In accordance with the concession conditions of photo material owners, the Municipality of Kea is responsible for the organization and management. The photos have been digitalized and are organized based on their sources. Significant sources of photo collections are the family and personal archives, press and magazines, documents and books of that time. The identity of people was investigated, wherever that was possible, while it also served as a hint for the most accurate dating of each photo. The documentation effort was made by the use of a comparative study based on the buildings presented, the changes in their form or structural elements, the notes of family albums or at the back of the photos, as well as by oral statements of the people depicted and of the photo owners. As the Photo Library will be enriched with new photos and our research will continue, more evidence is going to result in the fullest documentation of the material. The Photo Library will organize periodic actions relevant to the different thematic parts of the material available, such as educational programs and displays.
